A DVR can display live video footage from numerous CCTV camera sources simultaneously onto its hard disk. This means there are no cassettes or tapes to change!

The recorded data can be searched and reviewed (view by date & time or by camera or by specific events). Playback is allowable even if still recording. If required, data can be archived to CD, DVD or an external hard drive.

Entry level DVR systems usually have 4 channels, are extremely affordable and simple to operate. They usually use MPEG4 compression.

Professional systems often use the proprietary H-264 compression technique and higher frame rates giving improved clarity. These systems can have up to 32 channels.

Remote viewing and activation is also possible via 3G mobile phones or via the internet. Recording can be either continuous, scheduled, motion initiated or alarm based. Integration with an access control system is also an option for commercial applications.
